Design Engineer

About the role

Elevation Recruitment Group's Design & Projects division is seeking a Design Engineer to join a key client’s engineering team in Plymouth. The role covers the full product lifecycle, from concept through to production support, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with industry standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of new products, guiding projects from specification to production release.
• Maintain and update 3D models and engineering drawings with proper version control.
• Design and procure jigs, fixtures, and production tooling, providing production engineering support.
• Prepare and manage technical documentation such as design specs, risk assessments, test plans and manuals.
• Perform mechanical analysis and validation to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
• Troubleshoot design‑related issues in production and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
• Provide technical support to sales and marketing, including product presentations and field demonstrations.
• Liaise with customers, suppliers and partners to support engineering activities.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (BEng or equivalent).
• Experience in a regulated industry such as railway is advantageous.
• Strong problem‑solving ability and a practical, hands‑on approach.
• Excellent communication skills for producing clear technical documentation and leading design reviews.
• Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.

Required skills

• Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling (Solid Edge, Teamcenter preferred).
• Mechanical analysis and validation techniques.
• Design of jigs, fixtures and production tooling.
• Technical documentation preparation.
