General Porter Driver – Backshifts & Weekend Relief

About the role

The General Porter Driver provides essential transport and portering services across the NHS Scotland logistics network. Working on backshifts and alternating weekends, the role supports the 24/7 delivery of goods, supplies and patient transport.

Key responsibilities

• Drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes to transport goods, medical supplies and patients safely.
• Cover all shifts – day, night, evenings and weekends – as a relief porter.
• Assist with the efficient provision of portering services throughout the organisation.
• Maintain accurate records of movements and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
• Perform basic vehicle checks and report any issues promptly.

Required profile

• Valid UK driving licence permitting operation of vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
• Experience in logistics, transport or portering within a healthcare setting is desirable.
• Flexibility to work varied shift patterns, including nights and weekends.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, patient‑focused environment.

Required skills

• Safe vehicle operation and adherence to road safety regulations.
• Basic knowledge of health and safety procedures for patient and goods transport.
• Good communication skills for interacting with clinical and support staff.
