Head of Care

About the role

The Head of Care will lead and oversee the delivery of high‑quality residential services for children and young people in Carlisle. Reporting to senior leadership, you will be responsible for safeguarding, regulatory compliance and the strategic growth of the organisation’s care homes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership across children’s residential homes.
• Ensure safeguarding and support for positive outcomes in all areas of development.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with families, commissioners, local authorities and partner agencies.
• Promote an environment that encourages children and young people to reach their full potential through effective care planning and therapeutic support.
• Support the growth and sustainability of residential services, managing resources and staffing effectively.
• Lead, motivate, develop and supervise managers and care teams, fostering a high‑performing culture.
• Drive continuous improvement and accountability across all services.
• Collaborate with internal departments to enhance service development and operational excellence.
• Ensure compliance with Ofsted regulations, safeguarding legislation and organisational policies.
• Produce and oversee reports, action plans and documentation, meeting all deadlines.
• Represent the organisation professionally with external agencies and the local community.

Required profile

• Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (or equivalent) and a relevant Level 3 qualification in Children’s Residential Care.
• Minimum two years’ recent experience in children’s residential care, including at least one year in a supervisory or managerial role.
• Strong knowledge of Ofsted regulations, Children’s Homes legislation, safeguarding and child protection procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to provide both strategic and operational leadership.

• Competitive salary of £50,000‑£60,000 per annum, dependent on experience.
