About the role

Markel is looking for a market‑leading specialist to own and grow a high‑profit Life Science underwriting portfolio in the UK. The role combines technical underwriting leadership with front‑line trading impact, giving you autonomy to shape strategy without direct line‑management responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement a growth strategy for an £8 m GWP portfolio, targeting 25 %+ year‑on‑year profitable growth.
• Act as the technical authority on complex Life Science risks, guiding underwriting appetite and referrals.
• Lead market conversations with brokers, drive product innovation and optimise pricing, wording and coverage.
• Coach and up‑skill underwriters across new business and renewals, influencing a more daring underwriting outlook.

Required profile

• Proven Life Science underwriting experience with strong technical expertise on complex casualty risks.
• Track record of delivering profitable growth in a broker‑facing, market‑facing environment.
• Ability to balance detailed analysis with decisive, commercial decision‑making.
• Comfort influencing without formal authority and a strong market reputation.
