Housing Adviser – Prevent Homelessness

About the role

The Housing Adviser role is focused on preventing homelessness in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act and related guidance. You will assess housing needs, develop tailored plans, and manage a demanding caseload to ensure individuals receive appropriate support and avoid temporary accommodation wherever possible.

Key responsibilities

• Provide front‑of‑house service for customers seeking housing advice, directing both priority and non‑priority clients to the correct service area.
• Offer advice and mediation for households asked to leave friends or family, including home visits when needed to help them remain in their current accommodation.
• Deliver customer‑facing services through drop‑in sessions, scheduled appointments, and occasional evening meetings.
• Operate a telephone advice line, delivering full casework support to callers.
• Assess temporary accommodation needs and follow established placement and sign‑up processes.
• Manage a caseload of priority and non‑priority customers, maintaining accurate records and meeting performance targets.
• Utilise a range of housing options, including private renting, and work closely with the Lettings service.
• Provide private‑sector advice to prevent loss of privately rented or owner‑occupied homes, ensuring affordability and repair standards.
