IT Infrastructure Engineer – University Data Centre

About the role

The Data Centre and Operations team is looking for an IT Infrastructure Engineer to support the university’s virtual and physical server environment. You will ensure that core services remain secure, resilient and high‑performing for staff and students while contributing to ongoing projects and service improvements.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, operate and maintain virtual and physical servers, storage platforms and data‑centre equipment.
• Manage service requests, investigate incidents and resolve issues end‑to‑end.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, network, security and academic teams to deliver reliable services.
• Support research‑enabling platforms such as High‑Performance Computing (HPC) and virtual research environments.
• Participate in project delivery, upgrades and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• A degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience.
• Hands‑on experience with at least three of the listed technologies.
• Strong troubleshooting ability and ownership of issues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Required skills

• VMware vSphere (virtual data‑centre technology).
• Linux server installation, configuration and administration.
• Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory.
• Backup and recovery systems.
• HPC or research computing environments.
• Network protocols for server and storage access.
• Scripting/automation using PowerShell, Bash or Python.
• Desirable: Cisco UCS blade servers, public or private cloud concepts, industry‑standard IT certifications.
