Management Accountant – Finance Team

About the role

The company, a long‑established independent builders’ merchant, is seeking a proactive Management Accountant to join its Head Office finance team in Southampton. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you will support business performance by delivering accurate management accounts and commercial financial insight.

Key responsibilities

• Produce accurate monthly management accounts for the group and meet strict deadlines.
• Consolidate financial information across multiple group companies.
• Provide detailed financial analysis and performance reporting to senior management.
• Complete balance‑sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
• Maintain and monitor cash‑flow forecasts.
• Build strong relationships with branch and departmental managers to deliver commercial support.
• Identify cost‑saving opportunities and support budget management.
• Prepare investment appraisals and analyse the financial impact of initiatives.
• Maintain rolling forecasts for business expenditure.
• Review and improve finance processes, systems and internal controls.
• Support ERP and finance system development and maintenance.
• Assist with statutory requirements, including VAT returns and audit preparation.
• Provide payroll support when required and ensure accurate stock controls.
• Assist the Financial Controller and leadership team with ad‑hoc finance projects.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Management Accountant or in a similar finance role.
• Strong understanding of management accounts, balance‑sheet reconciliations and financial reporting.
• Confidence managing month‑end processes and meeting strict reporting deadlines.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Effective communication of financial information to non‑financial stakeholders.

Required skills

• Experience with ERP finance systems.
• Knowledge of VAT return preparation.
• Familiarity with payroll support processes.
