Mental Health Assistant (Learning Support)

About the role

The Mental Health Assistant provides emotional, behavioural and learning support to students with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Working within a school setting in East London, you will help pupils access education, improve wellbeing and achieve positive outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver one‑to‑one and small‑group support for students with identified mental health and emotional wellbeing needs.
• Assist pupils in developing emotional regulation, resilience and coping strategies.
• Collaborate with teachers to facilitate student engagement and academic progress.
• Promote positive behaviour and contribute to a safe, inclusive learning environment.
• Monitor student progress and maintain accurate intervention records.
• Liaise with teaching staff, parents/carers and external professionals as required.
• Follow safeguarding, child protection and confidentiality procedures.
• Participate in relevant meetings, training and professional development.

Required profile

• Experience working with young people in an educational or similar setting.
• Understanding of SEMH needs and adolescent mental health.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Calm, empathetic and resilient approach.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Desirable: Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, Mental Health First Aid or related wellbeing training, experience supporting SEND or SEMH pupils.
