Neighbourhood Caretaker – Council Housing Maintenance

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated Neighbourhood Caretaker to maintain the cleanliness and safety of council‑owned flats and maisonettes in Croydon. You will work on‑site, ensuring that communal areas meet high standards and that health‑and‑safety regulations are consistently applied.

Key responsibilities

• Clean internal areas of council housing, including flats, maisonettes and bin chambers.
• Clear blockages in chutes and report repairs.
• Maintain and rotate communal waste bins, wash food‑waste containers.
• Participate in deep‑cleaning blocks and graffiti removal.
• Trim shrubs and remove foliage from sites.
• Keep communal areas free of bulk rubbish and inspect/replace lights weekly.
• Report abandoned vehicles, vandalism, dog fouling and fly‑tipping.
• Monitor secondary estate services such as streetscape, grounds maintenance and communal repairs.
• Visit new tenants to explain refuse disposal arrangements.

Required profile

• Understanding of COSHH and risk‑assessment health & safety requirements.
• Experience in basic cleaning tasks and customer‑care environments.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.
• Physical capability to lift heavy items and use industrial cleaning equipment.
• Experience working with the public in a service‑delivery setting.

What we offer

• Hourly rate of £17.59 – £23.24 (inside IR35)
• 3‑month initial contract, 36 hours per week
