Planning Policy Officer – Stockport (Hybrid)

About the role

We are seeking a Planning Policy Officer to join the team supporting Stockport Council’s statutory planning functions. The role combines specialist advice on planning policy with the preparation and monitoring of the Local Plan and related infrastructure delivery plans.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert advice on planning policy and ensure compliance with national and local legislation.
• Prepare, update and monitor the Local Plan and associated policy documents.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure Delivery Plans (IDPs) to support strategic objectives.
• Analyse complex planning issues and produce evidence‑based recommendations.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including elected members, developers and community groups.
• Contribute to the development of strategic planning objectives and monitor their implementation.

Required profile

• 4‑6 years of experience in planning policy within a local authority or consultancy.
• Strong knowledge of UK planning legislation, policy frameworks and Local Plan processes.
• Proven ability to interpret complex planning data and produce clear advice.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Effective stakeholder engagement and negotiation abilities.
