Project Design Lead - Water Sector

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Project Design Lead to drive design delivery for a major water‑industry infrastructure programme. You will own the technical solution from concept through construction and commissioning, ensuring robust, cost‑effective outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Operate in line with corporate health, safety, environmental and CDM standards, producing risk assessments and sustainable designs.
• Lead multi‑disciplinary design teams, guaranteeing quality, whole‑life value (Totex) and timely delivery of outline and detailed designs.
• Manage scope, change control and design resources while upholding technical standards.
• Challenge existing practices, research industry best practice and promote digital design concepts with suppliers.
• Coach and mentor junior staff, fostering an engaged and innovative team culture.
• Collaborate with Project Managers and Programme Design Managers to deliver lowest whole‑life cost solutions and support business case development.
• Provide early warnings on programme risks and ensure the design schedule remains achievable.

Required profile

• Proven senior engineering experience in water or utilities infrastructure design.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary supplier and in‑house design teams.
• Authority to make final design decisions and recommendations across the business.
• Strong understanding of CDM regulations, health & safety, and environmental sustainability.

• Hybrid working model (2‑3 days in office, based in Falmer and London).
• Competitive salary between £60,000‑£64,000 per year.
• Full‑time permanent contract (37 hours/week) within a leading water‑sector programme.
