Public Realm Maintenance Operative – Lancaster

About the role

This permanent position with Lancaster City Council involves keeping the city’s parks, streets, beaches and other public spaces tidy and welcoming. You will work outdoors, operate council vehicles and equipment, and be part of a team that ensures the community’s environment is well maintained.

Key responsibilities

• Grass cutting, hedge trimming and general grounds maintenance
• Street cleansing, litter collection and graffiti removal
• Winter gritting, snow clearance and other seasonal duties
• Support for community events and public‑space projects
• Driving council vehicles and operating maintenance equipment after training

Required profile

• Full UK driving licence (Category C1 preferred)
• Experience in manual, outdoor, construction or maintenance work
• Reliable, hardworking and willing to learn
• Comfortable working in all weather conditions
• Flexible to work evenings, weekends and on‑call standby periods

Required skills

• Category C1 licence (or willingness to obtain one)
• Operation of maintenance equipment
• Driving council vehicles safely

• £220 on‑call standby payment each week plus additional call‑out rates
