Reader/Professor – Mathematical & Statistical Data Science

About the role

Newcastle University invites applications for a senior academic position at Reader or Professor level in Mathematical or Statistical Data Science, including AI. The role is based in the Statistics and Data Science section of the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics and will start on a mutually agreed date.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop research programmes in mathematical and/or statistical data science that complement existing school activities.
• Secure external research funding and publish in internationally recognised journals.
• Contribute to the Data Science 2030 (DS2030) and AI2030 faculty projects, shaping undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across the university, including the School of Computing and the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
• Provide academic leadership, mentoring junior staff and supervising research students.

Required profile

• Established record of high‑quality research and publications in data science, statistics, mathematics or AI.
• Experience in obtaining competitive research grants.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and develop curricula at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and outreach.

Required skills

• Expertise in mathematical and statistical methods for data science.
• Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.
• Ability to publish in high‑impact international journals.
