Research Laboratory Manager, Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry (University of Cambridge) · Cambridge
Job description
About the role
The Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge is recruiting a senior scientific person for the research group of Professor Matthew Gaunt. It is a central role in the scientific development, leadership and operation of a group combining synthetic organic chemistry, catalysis, medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. The post is primarily a scientific leadership role rather than a conventional laboratory management position.
Key responsibilities
- Work closely with Professor Gaunt to shape and deliver the group's research programme, including developing new research ideas, initiating and coordinating projects, preparing research proposals and publishing results.
- Guide ongoing research, advise on experimental design and mechanistic interpretation, troubleshoot challenging chemistry and identify promising new directions.
- Supervise and mentor postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and undergraduates, with particular responsibility for early-stage researchers.
- Maintain a productive, collaborative and supportive research environment and provide continuity of expertise across several research programmes.
- Take responsibility for aspects of laboratory organisation, research infrastructure, equipment, resources and financial oversight.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, depending on the candidate's interests and aspirations.
Required profile
- PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or a closely related discipline.
- Substantial postdoctoral or equivalent research experience and a strong record of scientific achievement.
- Broad expertise in modern synthetic chemistry and the ability to contribute beyond one's own specialism.
- Experience of mentoring researchers, coordinating collaborative projects and contributing to proposals and publications is particularly valuable.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills, initiative, sound judgement and a commitment to supporting others.
The position suits someone considering a future independent academic career, offering experience in scientific leadership, research strategy, project development, funding applications and supervision. Applications are made through the university's online recruitment system by quoting reference MA51499; enquiries can be directed to the named contact.
