Senior Systems Engineer – Oxford

About the role

We are a well‑funded Oxford start‑up seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to own the development of next‑generation opto‑electro‑mechanical products. You will lead the technical journey from concept through to field‑ready delivery, working at the intersection of precision mechanics, automation, software and reliability engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Lead system architecture from requirements, design, prototyping, verification to release.
• Develop system‑level specifications, performance budgets and risk models across optical, mechanical, electrical and software domains.
• Define and drive integration, validation and troubleshooting processes.
• Combine motion control, electronics and machine‑vision into production‑ready systems.
• Apply optical modelling and simulation tools to optimise performance and reduce errors.
• Create verification plans, test procedures and fault‑analysis frameworks.
• Design system‑level control methodologies, ensure compliance with international safety standards and implement robust interlocks and diagnostics.

Required profile

• Strong technical background in precision instrumentation, preferably with a degree in Physics, Engineering or a related field.
• Proven experience developing and integrating precision motion‑controlled stages for high‑accuracy processes.
• Ability to architect and optimise complex systems that include optical and machine‑vision elements.
• Solution‑first mindset, excellent organisational and communication skills, and a full‑ownership mentality.
