Software Engineering Director - Customer Product Engineering

About the role

FanDuel is looking for a Software Engineering Director to lead the teams behind its Customer Product Engineering (CPE) domain, which covers payments and money movement, account and onboarding, geolocation, responsible gaming and player integrity, and promotions, rewards, loyalty, campaign orchestration, personalisation and marketing messaging. The role is hands-on leadership: leading managers and senior engineers, setting technical direction alongside Principal and Senior Staff Engineers, and working closely with Product, Compliance, Risk, Finance and Customer Operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead multiple engineering teams within CPE, setting a clear technical vision and holding delivery to it.
• Own customer outcomes such as registration and verification completion, time to first bet, deposit and withdrawal success rates, payout speed, geolocation pass rates and journey availability.
• Set standards for availability and operational excellence, including KPIs, instrumentation and distinguishing real degradation from noise.
• Prepare for event-driven peak load, with capacity, failover and degradation behaviour proven in advance.
• Reduce the impact of third-party failures (payment providers, KYC and identity vendors, geolocation suppliers) through redundancy, graceful degradation and fallbacks.
• Treat regulation as an engineering requirement, designing for auditability, evidence and data boundaries, and building the relationship with Compliance and Legal.
• Hold responsible gaming and player integrity to the same product standard as revenue-generating features.
• Simplify the estate by retiring duplicated capability, reducing coupling between teams and improving lead time to change.
• Set the standard for AI use across the software lifecycle, with evidence of its effect on throughput, quality and security.
• Partner with Product, Compliance, Risk, Finance and Customer Operations to shape the roadmap early.
• Hire, develop and manage managers and senior engineers, and grow the leadership reporting to you.
• Support production systems, including on-call and incident response, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
• Deliver architecturally sound solutions, make build-versus-buy decisions and communicate a three- to five-year strategic vision.
• Manage the budget and recognise waste in tooling, infrastructure, vendor services and payment processing costs.

Required profile

• 10+ years in a software role, with 5+ years leading engineering teams and experience leading other managers.
• Track record of high-volume transactional systems where correctness, money and customer trust matter, ideally in payments, financial services, identity or another regulated domain.
• Experience with highly available, fault-tolerant systems under extreme, event-driven peak load, and with observability and KPIs.
• Experience building on third parties at scale and in a regulated environment.
• Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Required skills

• Modern back-end languages, functional and object-oriented, including Java.
• Cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS), containers and orchestration.
• Agile methods and software delivery practices.
• On-call support and production incident handling.
• Partner development with near-shore, off-shore or third-party teams.
