Staff Nurse – Cardiac & Thoracic Critical Care (Band 5)

About the role

The Oxford Heart Centre is seeking a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Cardiac and Thoracic Critical Care Unit (CTCCU). The role involves providing level two and three care to patients after cardiac, major aortic and thoracic surgery, as well as those with acute cardiac conditions. You will work in a supportive, research‑focused environment with opportunities for specialist skill development.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and 1:2 nursing care for post‑elective and emergency cardiac and thoracic surgery patients.
• Manage ventilation, including invasive and non‑invasive modes and weaning.
• Administer specialised cardiac medications and manage chest drains.
• Deliver renal replacement therapy and haemofiltration.
• Control post‑operative pain and sedation.
• Assist with ventricular assist devices, cardiac output monitoring, acute arrhythmia management, advanced ECG interpretation and intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP) therapy.

• Demonstrates patient‑centred care and recognises individual patient needs.
• Enthusiastic, motivated and able to thrive in a high‑intensity critical care environment.
• Willing to undertake a 3‑month supernumerary period with mentorship.
