Staff Nurse – Cardiac & Thoracic Critical Care

About the role

Band 5 Staff Nurse position on the Cardiac and Thoracic Critical Care Unit (CTCCU) at the Oxford Heart Centre. The role provides level 2 and 3 care to patients after cardiac, major aortic and thoracic surgery and to those with acute cardiac medical conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver 1:1 and 1:2 nursing care to post‑operative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients.
• Manage ventilation, including invasive and non‑invasive modes and weaning.
• Administer specialised cardiac medications.
• Oversee chest drain management and renal replacement therapy.
• Provide post‑operative pain and sedation management.

Required profile

• Demonstrates patient‑centred care and the ability to recognise individual needs.

Required skills

• Ventilation management (invasive and non‑invasive) and weaning.
• Use of ventricular assist devices and cardiac output monitoring.
• Haemofiltration and renal replacement therapy.
• Acute arrhythmia management, advanced ECG interpretation and intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP) therapy.
• Chest drain management.
• Specialised cardiac medication administration.
• Post‑operative pain and sedation management.
