Systems Engineer – School of Informatics

About the role

The University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics is seeking a Systems Engineer to support its extensive research and teaching computing environment. This fixed‑term position (24 months) offers the chance to work with cutting‑edge technologies in a world‑class academic setting.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with the management and maintenance of the School’s virtualisation services.
• Provide day‑to‑day support for the on‑premises Linux server estate.
• Support users of the Linux platform, troubleshooting and resolving issues.
• Collaborate with research groups to ensure computing resources meet project requirements.
• Contribute to documentation and knowledge‑base updates.

Required profile

• Strong interest in Linux server management and virtualisation technologies.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Good communication skills for interacting with academic staff and students.

Required skills

• Linux operating system.
• Virtualisation (e.g., VMware, KVM, or similar).
• Experience with Linux server administration.
