Assistant Accountant

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Accountant to support the finance function of a well‑established, family‑owned business in Watford. You will work closely with the Accountant and other departments, taking ownership of accounts receivable while also assisting with payables and general bookkeeping.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the sales ledger and raise customer invoices
• Perform credit control and customer account management
• Process purchase invoices, including matching, coding and posting
• Prepare and execute payment runs
• Carry out bank, credit card and balance‑sheet reconciliations
• Prepare and submit VAT returns
• Process customer receipts and supplier payments using Sage 50
• Support month‑end closing activities
• Assist with administrative tasks as required
• Provide ad‑hoc support across the wider business

Required profile

• Experience in a full‑cycle accounts role within a fast‑paced SME
• Strong knowledge of Sage and SAP accounting systems
• Proven ability to prepare VAT returns
• Confidence with reconciliations, payment runs and invoice processing
• Experience with purchase ledger, sales ledger and credit control
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills
• Proactive attitude with the ability to prioritise workload
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
