Assistant Scientist (Reactor Chemistry)

About the role

Babcock is recruiting an Assistant Scientist Reactor Chemistry for its Devonport Royal Dockyard site in Plymouth. Working in the Reactor Chemistry team, you will support the safe operation, maintenance and long-term sustainability of the UK's nuclear-powered submarine fleet. The role combines laboratory science, technical analysis and operational support, and is full time, 35 hours per week, based on site.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific and technical support for reactor chemistry monitoring, surveillance and compliance activities
• Maintain accurate technical records, laboratory data and supporting documentation
• Assist with the control, storage and inventory management of chemicals and controlled materials
• Follow laboratory procedures and compliance requirements to maintain safety, quality and regulatory standards
• Contribute to maintaining laboratory standards and developing reactor chemistry capability

Required profile

• GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above
• Level 3 qualification in a scientific discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
• Sole UK National able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance
• Desirable: further qualifications in Chemistry, Analytical Science, Nuclear Science or a related discipline; experience in a dockyard, scientific, engineering or nuclear environment; full UK driving licence

Required skills

• Understanding of scientific or technical principles relevant to chemistry, analytical science or a related discipline
• Experience supporting monitoring, surveillance or analysis activities in a laboratory
• Ability to maintain accurate technical records and follow established procedures and compliance requirements
• Strong communication, teamwork and attention to detail, with a commitment to safety and quality standards
