Caisson Operative

About the role

Babcock is recruiting a Caisson Operative for its Devonport Royal Dockyard site in Plymouth. You will join a specialist team that operates and maintains the dockyard infrastructure that lets vessels enter, leave and operate safely. The role is full time, 35 hours per week, based on site, and pays between £28,200 and £32,200 depending on experience.

Key responsibilities

• Operate pump houses, penstocks, caissons and control systems to support docking and undocking.
• Monitor dock and basin water levels, dock conditions and safety systems.
• Lead and support ship, caisson and gate movements across the dockyard.
• Assist with structural surveys, dock preparations, maintenance and refurbishment of dockyard assets.
• Work safely in confined spaces, at height, around water and in operational dockyard environments.

Required profile

• Experience in operational, industrial, maritime, engineering or maintenance environments.
• Ability to follow safe systems of work and health and safety procedures.
• Willingness and ability to complete all required role-specific training.
• Must be a sole UK National able to obtain and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance; the role is subject to national security clearance and trade control restrictions.

Required skills

• Use of hand tools, battery-powered tools or mechanical equipment safely and effectively.
• Team collaboration and taking responsibility for tasks.
• Physical stamina for active, outdoor work in challenging environments.
• Desirable: slinging or lifting experience, forklift truck operator certification and powerboat qualifications.
