Complex Needs Support Worker

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate Complex Needs Support Worker for a specialist school in Leeds that educates children and young people aged 2‑19 with autism and complex communication needs. You will work closely with teachers, therapists and other staff to help pupils access learning, develop independence and regulate emotions in a safe, nurturing environment.

Key responsibilities

• Support pupils with autism and complex communication needs throughout the school day.
• Manage challenging, unpredictable or sensory‑driven behaviours using calm, consistent strategies.
• Create and maintain a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment.
• Provide personal care assistance when required.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists and support staff to adapt support strategies to individual needs.
• Encourage pupil engagement, confidence, independence and positive relationships.

Required profile

• Lived experience supporting individuals with autism or complex learning needs.
• Previous experience in support work, care, SEN, youth work or related fields.
• Confidence in managing challenging behaviour with a calm, positive approach.
• Patient, nurturing and empathetic demeanor.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Reliability, emotional resilience and genuine passion for supporting young people.
• Willingness to work with pupils across ages 2‑19.
