Detective Constable – Transferee & Re‑Joiner (London)

About the role

The British Transport Police (BTP) is building a talent pool of qualified Detective Constables to join its Crime Investigation Department in London. This opportunity is aimed at current or former police officers who wish to transfer into BTP or return after a short break. Successful candidates will be deployed across the rail network, investigating a wide range of offences and supporting victims and witnesses.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct proactive and reactive investigations into crimes occurring on the rail network.
• Gather, preserve and analyse evidence to build robust cases for prosecution.
• Act as a liaison for victims and witnesses, providing updates and support throughout investigations.
• Collaborate with other law‑enforcement agencies and BTP units to ensure coordinated responses.
• Maintain accurate records and contribute to intelligence reporting.

Required profile

• Current or former officer from a Home Office Police Force, Police Scotland or PSNI.
• Substantive rank with completed probation for transferees; re‑joiners must have left within the past five years.
• Three consecutive years of UK residence.
• No live misconduct warnings, performance issues, or active investigations.
• Financial standing clear of active CCJs, unmanaged IVAs or bankruptcy.

Required skills

• Qualified Detective status (PIP 2) at Constable rank.
• Strong investigative and analytical abilities.
• Excellent communication and liaison skills.
• Understanding of rail‑related policing environments.
