About the role
Birchwood School is seeking a dedicated secondary teacher to deliver specialist subject lessons up to GCSE level. You will create engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the diverse needs of pupils with autism, SEMH and other complex barriers to learning.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver high‑quality lessons in your specialist subject up to GCSE level.
- Adapt teaching methods to support a wide range of learning abilities and needs.
- Create a calm, structured, and supportive classroom environment.
- Apply positive behaviour support strategies in line with school policies.
- Monitor, assess and record pupil progress regularly.
- Collaborate with learning support assistants, therapists, care staff and families.
- Support pupils’ wellbeing, including personal care where required.
- Promote safeguarding, equality and inclusion at all times.
Required profile
- GCSEs (A*–C or equivalent) including English and Maths.
- Strong subject knowledge in the specialist area.
- Child‑centred approach with a passion for inclusive education.
- Effective classroom management and communication skills.
- Ability to adapt teaching for complex needs.
- Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.
- Desirable: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and experience teaching secondary pupils up to GCSE.
- Desirable: Experience working with pupils with autism, SEMH or additional learning needs.
