Health Protection Nurse – NHS Dumfries & Galloway

About the role

Join the NHS Dumfries & Galloway Public Health team as a Health Protection Nurse, responsible for preventing, surveilling, investigating and controlling communicable diseases and environmental health incidents across a diverse rural region.

Key responsibilities

• Manage notifications of infectious diseases and public health incidents.
• Provide specialist advice to professionals, organisations and the public.
• Support outbreak management and conduct risk assessments.
• Deliver education, training and learning to colleagues and partners.
• Participate in rota cover for day‑to‑day health‑protection enquiries.
• Support governance through risk management, adverse event review and quality‑improvement activities.

Required profile

• Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
• Experience in public health, community nursing, infection prevention & control, acute nursing or a related field.
• Strong clinical judgement, communication and decision‑making skills.
• Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
• Passion for improving population health and reducing health inequalities.
• Health‑protection experience is desirable, but training will be provided.
