About the role
We are seeking a Health Protection Practitioner (Level 1) to join a multi‑disciplinary team delivering day‑to‑day health protection services, managing infectious and environmental hazards and supporting major incident response. The position offers entry‑level development with training, on‑call duties and progression opportunities.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the daily operation of the acute response function, ensuring safe and effective service delivery.
- Provide first‑point specialist advice to health professionals on health protection matters.
- Assess and manage routine acute response work and non‑complex incidents.
- Escalate complex incidents and outbreaks to senior managers.
- Maintain a caseload with accurate records and handover procedures.
- Use an evidence‑based approach for clinical advice and seek senior input when needed.
- Support case review processes and longer‑term management of regional issues.
- Participate in on‑call rotas and emergency planning under EPRR arrangements.
- Develop and maintain surveillance systems for communicable diseases and environmental hazards.
- Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Required profile
- First degree in a health‑related field (e.g., environmental health, biomedical science, public health) or equivalent experience.
- Registered Nurse with NMC registration (for NHS terms) or working towards registration with an appropriate health/science professional body (for Civil Service terms).
- Experience as a practitioner in a health‑related discipline such as nursing, environmental health, biomedical sciences or public health.
- Understanding of the Health and Social Care Act, safeguarding, data protection and information governance.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain good relationships with managers, staff and external contacts.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.

- Salary range £33,422 – £48,117 per annum, dependent on qualifications and terms.
