Infrastructure Specialist

About the role

MKM, the leading independent builders’ merchant in the UK, is seeking an Infrastructure Specialist to join its central IT team in Hull. You will help design, deploy, and maintain the company’s multi‑site IT infrastructure, supporting both existing systems and new cloud‑based technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Support and monitor all infrastructure components, including network, servers, telecoms, desktops and security.
• Assist end‑users, the IT Helpdesk and other IT teams in troubleshooting and issue resolution.
• Plan, configure and roll out new equipment and systems across existing and newly opened MKM branches.
• Manage installations, migrations and deployments, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
• Perform systems monitoring, patching, backup, recovery and high‑availability tasks.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience supporting IT infrastructure and desktop environments in a multi‑site organisation.
• Self‑motivated, service‑oriented and capable of managing projects independently.
• Strong analytical mindset with the ability to consider broader business impacts of technical decisions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interaction with management, suppliers and internal customers.

Required skills

• Microsoft Azure (virtual servers, networking, related services).
• Microsoft 365 suite – Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Intune.
• Active Directory administration and Group Policy management.
• Networking fundamentals – switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs.
• Desktop environment configuration and maintenance.
• Backup and recovery, high‑availability and business continuity concepts.
• Security best practices, including vulnerability management.
