Qualified Lawyer (Grade 7) – Government Legal Department

About the role

The Government Legal Department is seeking qualified lawyers to join its Grade 7 team. You will work across a wide range of practice areas, providing legal advice and support to senior government officials and ministers.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to government departments and ministers on policy, regulatory and legislative matters.
• Draft, review and interpret legislation, regulations and policy documents.
• Handle litigation, advisory, commercial and employment matters across diverse public‑sector issues.
• Manage a caseload and contribute to high‑profile cases that attract parliamentary and media scrutiny.

Required profile

• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Ability to think strategically and creatively about complex legal issues.
• Strong judgement, analytical skills and the capacity to give balanced, risk‑based advice.
• Willingness to work collaboratively with ministers, officials and other legal professionals.

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis.
• Drafting of legislation, policy and contractual documents.
• Litigation and advisory experience across multiple practice areas.
