SEMH Teaching Assistant – Specialist Secondary School

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist secondary school in Wigan. You will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential.

Key responsibilities

• Support pupils with SEMH needs both inside and outside the classroom.
• Build positive relationships and act as a consistent role model.
• Assist the class teacher in delivering engaging, differentiated learning activities.
• Use positive strategies to help pupils regulate emotions and behaviour.
• Encourage independence, resilience and confidence in learning.
• Collaborate with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to monitor individual progress.

Required profile

• Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour.
• Calm, patient and resilient approach.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
• Team Teach training desirable but not essential.
