Senior Embedded Software Engineer – Defence

About the role

We are seeking a senior embedded software engineer to develop and deliver mission‑critical tooling for national security and defence customers. The role is based in Bristol with the possibility to commute from Hertfordshire or Cheltenham and combines on‑site work with occasional remote days.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of bespoke embedded solutions across ESP32, Raspberry Pi and ARM Cortex platforms.
• Write production‑grade C, C++ and Python code that interfaces with hardware peripherals.
• Architect communication protocols, integrate sensors and actuators, and ensure performance and robustness.
• Conduct debugging, testing and optimisation in laboratory and field environments.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to shape requirements and influence delivery plans.
• Maintain documentation, enforce Git workflow standards and mentor junior engineers.

Required profile

• Extensive hands‑on experience in embedded software development.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ (and Python where appropriate).
• Deep knowledge of low‑level interfaces such as UART, GPIO, USB, SPI/I²C.
• Comfortable working in Linux‑based toolchains and using JTAG/SWD debugging equipment.
• Ability to communicate clearly and influence technical decisions across teams.
