Systems Technician – IT Services

About the role

The Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge is looking for a proactive Systems Technician to join the IT Services Server team. This on‑site position supports both on‑premise and cloud‑based server environments, ensuring reliable operation for research and academic activities.

Key responsibilities

• Deploy, configure and troubleshoot physical and virtual servers.
• Perform hardware and software upgrades and maintain server rooms and racks.
• Manage user accounts, quotas, software access and related requests.
• Carry out network patching, configure server network connectivity and respond to first‑line network incidents.
• Manage system and data backups, monitor logs and network activity, and support cybersecurity standards.

Required profile

• Results‑oriented team player with strong customer‑service focus.
• Ability to work within an Agile‑based framework using Jira sprints, SOPs and defined digital workflows.
• Willingness to learn the university’s IT ecosystem and contribute to continuous improvement.
• Commitment to meeting SLAs and maintaining high CSAT scores.
