Tutor for children with special needs

About the role

EFWS is seeking compassionate tutors to work with children and young people in the Bournemouth area who have become disengaged from mainstream education. The role involves delivering personalised support to help learners rebuild confidence, agency and a love for learning.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality 1:1 or small‑group tutoring for students with ASD, ADHD, SEMH and other complex needs.
• Deliver the EFWS curriculum, including GCSE, Functional Skills and ASDAN, adapting lessons to engage reluctant learners.
• Create a safe, inclusive environment that encourages independent learning habits.
• Track progress using assessment tools and give feedback that builds self‑esteem.
• Collaborate with families, stakeholders and agencies within a co‑production model.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent (or studying towards QTS) for teachers.
• Relevant experience in youth work, coaching or subject‑specific tutoring for mentors/tutors.
• Strong understanding of Special Educational Needs and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
• Familiarity with curriculum planning and delivery for disengaged learners.
• Excellent communication, organisation and a genuine commitment to patience and empathy.
