Wheel Lathe Operator

About the role

The Wheel Lathe Operator is responsible for re‑profiling wheel sets for locomotives and wagons, ensuring compliance with Railway Group Standards and statutory regulations. The role works on a shift pattern (4 days on, 4 days off) covering days and nights in a Leeds‑based workshop.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and operate the wheel lathe at operator level, following MIE 0503 and CSD005 procedures.
• Machining of rail wheel sets according to approved maintenance plans.
• Complete all required paperwork for examinations, repairs, and material issuance accurately and on time.
• Assist team leaders during maintenance and tyre‑turning events and support plant‑equipment repairs and commissioning.
• Ensure health, safety and engineering standards are applied, preventing harm to employees, contractors, customers or the public.
• Maintain cleanliness of workshop areas in line with 5S requirements and assist with upkeep of maintenance vehicle history files.

Required profile

• Ability to work shifts, including days and nights, on a 4‑on/4‑off roster.
• Commitment to health and safety policies and statutory railway standards.
• Willingness to attend safety, quality and technical briefings and undertake relevant training.

Required skills

• Wheel lathe operation and maintenance.
• Machining of rail wheel sets.
• Knowledge of MIE 0503 and CSD005 documentation.
• Proficiency with workshop tools and instrumentation.
