Geotechnical & Rock Mechanics Engineer – Mining Projects

About the role

WSP is looking for a Geotechnical / Rock Mechanics Engineer to join its UK Mine Engineering & Stability team. You will support a diverse portfolio of open‑pit and underground mining projects while also contributing to major infrastructure and geo‑energy developments across the UK and internationally.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver geotechnical and rock‑mechanics services for mining projects, including rock‑mass characterisation and interpretation of borehole, laboratory and field data.
• Apply rock‑mass classification systems (Q, RMR, GSI) and perform statistical analysis.
• Develop 3D geological and structural models using Leapfrog Geo.
• Assess rock‑mass stability for slopes and underground excavations using empirical, analytical and numerical methods.
• Conduct numerical modelling with Itasca software (FLAC2D, FLAC3D, UDEC, 3DEC) and the Rocscience suite.
• Participate in fieldwork such as core logging, site inspections and rock‑face mapping.
• Collaborate with WSP’s global mining and ground‑engineering teams and represent the firm in client‑facing roles.
• Travel within the UK and internationally as required.

Required profile

• Experience delivering geotechnical and rock‑mechanics services for open‑pit and underground mining projects.
• Willingness to travel domestically and abroad for site investigations and client meetings.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary and global teams.

Required skills

• Rock‑mass classification (Q, RMR, GSI).
• 3D geological modelling – Leapfrog Geo.
• Numerical modelling – FLAC2D, FLAC3D, UDEC, 3DEC, Rocscience suite.
• Rock‑mass stability assessment for slopes and underground excavations.
• Interpretation of borehole, laboratory and field geotechnical data.
