BSL Specialist Teaching Assistant

About the role

The role supports deaf and hearing‑impaired students in secondary schools across London, ensuring they can fully access the curriculum and participate in school life. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs and specialist services, providing both academic and communication assistance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide British Sign Language (BSL) support for students during mainstream lessons.
• Interpret spoken content into BSL to aid understanding and engagement.
• Support students' communication, language development and confidence.
• Adapt classroom materials to ensure accessibility.
• Promote inclusion and participation across all aspects of school life.
• Collaborate with teachers and specialist staff to implement individual learning plans.

Required profile

• Hold a recognised BSL qualification (Level 2 or above preferred).
• Experience supporting students with hearing impairments in an educational setting.
• Patient, proactive and committed to inclusive education.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Comfortable working with secondary‑aged students (11‑18).
• Willing to obtain an enhanced DBS check.
