Children Not in School Training Lead – Local Authority Experience

About the role
The Department for Education’s Elective Home Education team is seeking a Training Lead to design and deliver a national training package for local authority teams. This 12‑month fixed‑term role will support the rollout of the Children Not in School measures introduced by the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026.
Key responsibilities
- Design a comprehensive training offer for local authorities on implementing the new Children Not in School measures.
- Ensure training content is practical, proportionate, and reflects real‑world experience, including considerations for families with SEND or domestic abuse backgrounds.
- Translate legislation and statutory guidance into clear operational practice.
- Collaborate with policy officials, legal advisors, delivery teams, and external stakeholders to develop training materials.
- Develop and execute a delivery plan for the training programme before and after implementation.
- Contribute to ongoing updates and improvements to the training post‑implementation.
Required profile
- Demonstrated experience working within local authority operations or a strong background in Elective Home Education.
- Active involvement in the home‑education community, such as running parent forums or community engagement initiatives.
- Understanding of the challenges faced by families with SEND, domestic abuse, or other safeguarding concerns.
- Ability to interpret legislation and convert it into actionable guidance for practitioners.
