Council Tax Caseworker

About the role

The Council Tax Caseworker joins HMRC Valuation Office, the public sector’s property valuation authority. Working within the Council Tax team, you will process casework, conduct property inspections and support Valuation Tribunal hearings, helping to ensure fair tax banding for communities across England and Wales.

Key responsibilities

• Process Council Tax cases using the Valuation Operating System (VOS) with full training and support.
• Carry out property inspections and prepare evidence for Valuation Tribunal hearings.
• Liaise with customers via phone, email and face‑to‑face to resolve queries.
• Apply current legislation, organisational policies and guidelines to each case.
• Attend Valuation Tribunal hearings as an expert witness, representing the Listing Officer, either remotely or in person.
• Travel regularly to inspection sites across the country and work flexibly between office and home.

Required profile

• Willingness to travel nationally and stay overnight when required.
• Strong communication skills for written and verbal interaction with customers and tribunals.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Commitment to delivering high‑quality case outcomes within set targets.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the Valuation Operating System (VOS).
