International Tax Manager – Tax Reserves

About the role

We are looking for an International Tax Manager to join the Partners' Affairs and Tax (PAT) team in our Belfast office. The role focuses on managing partner tax reserves across the A&O Shearman group, ensuring accurate calculations, reconciliations and compliance with local tax regimes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop a detailed understanding of tax systems in all jurisdictions where the firm operates, specifically for partner tax reserves.
• Set up and maintain tax reserves in GBP and other currencies for equity and employee/consultant partners, reconcile balances and review tax equalisation arrangements.
• Coordinate UK and international tax teams to produce a consolidated view of partners’ tax reserve positions.
• Review and improve existing reserve processes, adapting them to business changes and legislative updates.
• Lead the design and implementation of reserve reconciliation processes for new offices.
• Support year‑end tax reserve calculations, tax equalisation calculations and related disclosures.
• Ensure reserve positions are correctly reflected in accounting systems and maintain deferred tax control accounts.
• Identify technology solutions, including AI and automation, to increase efficiency in the reserving process.
• Communicate reserve matters with partners, CFOs and other stakeholders, and liaise with external advisors as needed.
• Coordinate and mentor junior team members in London and Belfast.

Required profile

• Strong General Ledger accounting expertise.
• Excellent numeric ability.
• ACA or equivalent accounting qualification.
• Tax qualification such as ADIT or CTA (desirable).
• Manager‑level experience in personal or corporate tax.
• Collaborative approach with the ability to build relationships across global teams.
• Effective communication of complex tax and accounting issues.
