Payroll & Pensions Officer (Part‑time, Hybrid)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Payroll & Pensions Officer to join a busy public‑sector team on a part‑time, hybrid basis. The role involves overseeing payroll processing, pension administration, and acting as the primary point of contact for related queries.

Key responsibilities

• Provide input to the external payroll bureau and review outputs for accuracy.
• Validate payroll calculations, deductions and statutory requirements.
• Monitor and reconcile bureau outputs, resolving any discrepancies.
• Ensure timely payroll processing and compliance with legislation.
• Oversee payments to HMRC, pension providers and other statutory bodies.
• Maintain accurate records, audit trails and respond to information requests.
• Support pension processes, including contributions, enrolment and reporting.
• Liaise with pension providers to ensure compliant administration.
• Lead communication on payroll matters and build relationships with internal and external partners.
• Assist with the implementation of a new payroll bureau and system, including testing and data validation.

Required profile

• Demonstrable experience in public‑sector payroll.
• Strong knowledge of pensions administration and relevant legislation.
• Experience working with external payroll bureaus and validating outputs.
• Attention to detail and ability to resolve discrepancies.
• Familiarity with public‑sector schemes such as LGPS, NHS or Teachers.
