Software Developer – Hybrid (Croydon, Manchester, Sheffield)

About the role

The Home Office is looking for a Software Developer to join a hybrid team based in Croydon, Manchester or Sheffield. You will design, build and improve software components that form part of a larger product, working under the guidance of senior engineers and adhering to strict security standards.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable, secure software components using modern languages and frameworks.
• Write clean, reusable code following test‑driven development and the department’s technical standards.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate backend and frontend services.
• Participate in code reviews, debugging and troubleshooting across development and production environments.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and ensure version control best practices.

Required profile

• Demonstrable passion for software development and willingness to learn new technologies.
• Ability to work in a team, follow guidance from senior colleagues, and adhere to security clearance requirements (SC clearance and five years UK residency).
• Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
