Specialist Clinical Pharmacist – Surgery

About the role
The Specialist Clinical Pharmacist – Surgery will join the well‑established Surgical Team at the Royal Derby site. You will provide expert pharmacy services across a wide range of surgical specialties, supporting safe and effective medication use in a fast‑paced hospital environment.
Key responsibilities
- Attend ward rounds in trauma & orthopaedics, colorectal, upper GI, vascular, urology, ENT, ICU and step‑down units.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including pain specialists, dietitians, stoma nurses and orthopaedic surgeons.
- Promote medication safety, review and update surgical guidelines and protocols.
- Support Advanced Pharmacists with the introduction of new drugs and treatment pathways.
- Assist in managing errors, complaints and incidents in line with Trust risk policies.
- Prepare financial reports, monitor drug usage and expenditure for the surgical division.
- Deliver education sessions to junior pharmacists, doctors and nurses, and provide one‑to‑one mentorship to trainee pharmacists.
- Participate in quality‑improvement projects and train as a prescriber.
- Work weekends, bank holidays and senior late‑shift rotas as required.
Required profile
- Registered pharmacist with a passion for surgical pharmacy.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to engage in continuous professional development, including prescriber training.
- Flexibility to cover weekend and shift rotas.
Required skills
- Clinical pharmacy in surgical settings.
- Medication safety and adverse‑event management.
- Guideline development and protocol review.
- Drug utilisation monitoring and financial reporting.
- Prescribing competence (training to be undertaken).
