Stoma Clinical Nurse Specialist

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Stoma Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our colorectal multidisciplinary team. The post holder will deliver pre‑ and post‑operative stoma care, lead quality‑improvement projects and support patients across community and hospital settings.

Key responsibilities

• Provide pre‑ and post‑operative stoma care for patients undergoing temporary or permanent surgery.
• Travel to patients’ homes, wards and clinics; a car and driver’s licence are essential.
• Maintain clinical accountability for an efficient Stoma Care service in Southern Derbyshire hospitals and community settings.
• Deliver holistic support covering physical and psychological aspects of stoma surgery.
• Maintain accurate, contemporaneous patient records and ensure legal compliance.
• Act as a specialist resource for medical and nursing staff in both community and acute settings.
• Design and implement education and training programmes for nursing staff.
• Raise awareness of stoma care across multidisciplinary teams and conduct ongoing evaluation.
• Participate in clinical governance, audits and research‑based practice to continuously improve service quality.

Required profile

• Proven experience in stoma care within acute and community environments.
• Ability to work independently, travel frequently and manage a varied caseload.
• Strong leadership potential and willingness to develop management skills.
• Effective communication with medical, nursing, pharmacy and voluntary agencies.
• Commitment to the National Cancer Service Guidelines and multidisciplinary teamwork.
