1:1 SEMH Support Assistant – Primary School

About the role

This full‑time, temporary position starts in September 2025 and offers the chance to work one‑to‑one with a primary‑aged pupil who needs dedicated Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) support. You will be part of a nurturing SEN primary school in Stockport, helping the child feel safe, understood and able to engage in learning.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a pupil with SEMH needs.
• Build a positive, trusting relationship through consistency and empathy.
• Support emotional regulation and implement positive behaviour strategies.
• Encourage engagement in lessons and promote independence.
• Create a calm, structured and nurturing environment.
• Collaborate closely with teachers, SEN staff and families to achieve the best outcomes.
• Celebrate small successes and support the child’s social and emotional development.

Required profile

• Patient, resilient and genuinely passionate about supporting children with additional needs.
• Experience working with children or young people who have SEMH, behavioural, trauma or anxiety challenges.
• Ability to stay calm under pressure and adapt approaches to individual needs.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Understanding of consistency, empathy and positive behaviour support.
