Field Application Engineer – Mechanical (Heat Pump)

About the role

Octopus Energy is seeking a passionate Mechanical Engineer to join the Product Engineering team as a Field Application Engineer. You will act as the technical bridge between R&D design teams and field installation and operations teams, helping drive the renewable energy revolution.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the primary interface between product design and field installation teams.
• Identify improvement opportunities across design, manufacturing, installation and processes.
• Provide technical design advice to field design teams and support heat‑pump installations.
• Monitor performance data (COP/SCOP), debug issues, maintain issue logs and recommend enhancements.
• Maintain spares lists and update documentation for new products.
• Travel to customer sites and to Portadown, Belfast for collaboration with R&D and manufacturing.
• Contribute to training of support and installation teams.
• Own technical documentation for installers, customers and logistics.
• Analyse warranty returns and work with suppliers to determine root causes.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 5+ years experience designing mechanical parts for heating or cooling products/systems.
• Strong understanding of heat‑pump design and HVAC systems.
• Experience with retrofit and new‑build heating/cooling installations.
• Appreciation of smart electronic control systems for heating/cooling.
