Financial Controller

About the role

Amber Labs is a fast‑growing UK‑based technology consultancy seeking a hands‑on Financial Controller to own the end‑to‑end accounting function. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will drive month‑end efficiency, lead the year‑end audit and manage payroll while supporting strategic finance initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the full accounting cycle, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
• Accelerate month‑end close from 10 days to 2‑3 days.
• Manage the year‑end audit for the financial year ending August 2026.
• Oversee R&D tax credit submissions.
• Run end‑to‑end payroll in partnership with HR and an outsourced bureau.
• Maintain HMRC compliance for VAT, PAYE and payroll returns.
• Produce monthly management packs with financial statements, variance analysis and commentary.
• Support continuous improvement of controls, data storage and reporting, leveraging AI.
• Research and recommend suitable accounting software.
• Handle lender reporting, covenant management and refinancing data‑room preparation.

Required profile

• ACCA or ACA qualified with a proven track record in year‑end audits.
• Strong experience in VAT accounting and payroll compliance.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced SME environment.
• Excellent working capital management skills.
• Experience with remote working and professional services is a plus.
• Practical examples of using AI to improve finance controls and reporting.

• Experience using Telleroo for payments.
• Use of AI tools to enhance finance processes.
• Advanced financial reporting tools.
• VAT accounting and PAYE payroll processing.
