Group Financial Controller

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Group Financial Controller to join the senior management team of an established manufacturing business in Chelmsford. This hands‑on leadership position offers broad exposure across financial control, operational finance, reporting, cash‑flow management and business partnering. Reporting directly to the Group Finance Director, you will help drive financial performance and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day finance operations including sales ledger, purchase ledger, general ledger and banking activities.
• Lead the preparation of monthly management accounts, reconciliations and financial analysis.
• Manage cash‑flow forecasting and support working‑capital optimisation.
• Oversee payroll, pensions and employee benefits processes.
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards, VAT regulations and internal controls.
• Support budgeting, forecasting and financial planning activities.
• Partner with operational and commercial teams to provide financial insight and performance analysis.
• Support procurement and stock‑related financial processes.
• Drive process improvement across finance systems, controls and reporting.
• Prepare information for audit and maintain accurate financial records.
• Attend operational meetings and provide financial support to senior stakeholders.
• Lead, mentor and develop a small finance team.

Required profile

• Professional accountancy qualification (ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
• Previous experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role, preferably within manufacturing, engineering or a stock‑led environment.
• Strong management accounting and financial control expertise.
• Excellent analytical, communication and problem‑solving abilities.
• Proactive, hands‑on and solutions‑focused approach.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel proficiency.
