Housing Adviser

About the role

The Housing Adviser works to prevent homelessness in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act and related guidance. You will assess housing needs, create tailored plans and manage a demanding caseload in a busy environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct housing needs assessments and develop personalised housing plans.
• Provide front‑of‑house advice, directing priority and non‑priority customers to the appropriate service.
• Offer mediation and negotiation for households at risk of losing accommodation, including home visits when needed.
• Support tenants affected by welfare reforms by engaging landlords, increasing incomes, and facilitating moves to affordable housing.
• Assess applications under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 and recommend outcomes for approval.
• Refer single clients to appropriate support services and assist residents in supported housing to transition to general needs accommodation.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of UK homelessness legislation and best practice.
• Ability to manage complex, high‑pressure caseloads.
• Excellent communication and advocacy skills.
• Experience working with vulnerable populations.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the Homelessness Reduction Act and Part VII of the Housing Act 1996.
• Proficiency in case management and client assessment.
