Science Technician

About the role

We are partnering with a well‑established secondary school in Wigan to hire a Science Technician. The role starts in September 2026 and provides essential support to the Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments, ensuring practical lessons run safely and smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and set up equipment, chemicals and resources for practical science lessons.
• Support teachers during demonstrations and investigations.
• Maintain, clean and store laboratory equipment in line with health and safety regulations.
• Monitor stock levels, order resources and keep accurate inventory records.
• Ensure laboratories, preparation rooms and storage areas remain safe, organised and compliant.
• Carry out routine safety checks and risk assessments according to school policies.
• Assist with disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials following proper procedures.
• Provide administrative and resource‑management support to the wider Science Department.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Science Technician, Laboratory Technician or in a similar scientific environment.
• Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise workloads effectively.
• Strong communication skills and collaborative approach with teachers and staff.
• Proactive and flexible attitude to meet the needs of the Science Department.
• Enhanced DBS on the update service or willingness to obtain one through Hays.
