Senior Backend Developer (Volunteer)

About the role

Paramount Students is looking for a senior backend engineer to join the launch team on a volunteer basis. You will own micro‑services and lead the integration of FX and payment rails, helping the platform move money securely across the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and optimise RESTful APIs for high‑volume transactions.
• Implement FX/payment integrations, including UK Faster Payments, Open Banking settlements and multi‑currency logic.
• Develop stateless, asynchronous transactional services together with the CTO.
• Maintain Docker‑based deployment pipelines across cloud environments.
• Collaborate with QA and product teams to document schemas and unblock frontend work.

Required profile

• Strong experience with Node.js and TypeScript in production systems.
• Deep knowledge of AWS services (compute, IAM, databases).
• Proven expertise in Docker and micro‑service architectures.
• Background in financial systems, payment gateways (Stripe, Open Banking) and relational database design.
• Ability to build defensively with idempotency, rollback and recovery mechanisms.
